SUMMARY:CPD Seminar - Piled Foundations
DESCRIPTION:Piled foundations can enable new buildings and structures to be developed on sites with poor ground conditions.  Development of the second generation of Eurocodes is now well underway and will bring major changes to geotechnical design\, including the design of piled foundations. This seminar will cover key aspects of the design of piled foundations to the existing and new Eurocode 7\, including: \n  \n\nPile classification\nThe role of testing in pile design\nTreatment of downdrag and combined load cases\nAnalysis of pile groups and piled rafts\n\n  \nThere will be an interval half way through the afternoon and the seminar will conclude with an opportunity for delegates to ask the speaker questions in relation to piled foundation selection and design. \n  \nThis seminar is recommended for all structural engineers involved in the design\, specification\, or SER certification of piled foundations.  This seminar is recommended for 4 hours CPD.

SUMMARY:CPD Seminar - Retaining Structures
DESCRIPTION:Retaining structures are a feature of most construction projects to achieve differences in levels and maximise developable space.  They come in many forms and the Engineer must select the most appropriate retaining solution given the development requirements and site constraints.  Development of the second generation of Eurocodes is now well underway and will bring major changes to geotechnical design\, including the design of retaining structures. This seminar will cover key aspects of retaining wall design to the existing and new Eurocode 7\, including: \n  \n\nSelection of retaining wall types\nBasis of design of retaining structures\nDesign of semi-gravity retaining walls\nDesign of embedded retaining structures (such as secant and contiguous piled walls)\n\n  \nThere will be an interval half way through the afternoon and the seminar will conclude with an opportunity for delegate to ask the speaker questions in relation to retaining wall selection and design. \n  \nThis seminar is recommended for all structural engineers involved in the design\, specification\, or SER certification of retaining walls.  This seminar is recommended for 4 hours CPD.

What will frequencies and journey time be like? Will the network still be manned? Is your journey really necessary? One thing is for sure: if Covid had never happened it would have been much harder to imagine. \nPlease Book for Event Here   \nThe Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation is hosting this deferred 2021 event \nThe Annual ‘Professor James Attwood Memorial Lecture’  is hosted by the 13 member organisations of CPDC-Highlands and Islands\, on  a rotational basis \nIt will commence online at 6pm and  feature a Q&A session with the speaker towards the end of the evening.\n(We are sorry safety considerations required moving the evening online\, rather than live at Inverness Town House} \nThis event is open to all members of CPDC organisations and also to the General Public.

SUMMARY:(I StrE) COP26 Fringe Event Sustainability in the Built Environment: Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Structural engineers are the professionals charged with the efficient use of materials such as concrete\, steel and timber\, and since 2019 the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) has been working to put sustainability on a par with its enduring commitment to safety. \nThe IStructE Scottish Regional Group invite you to an open panel discussion on sustainability in the built environment\, ongoing activities across the industry\, and the impact of this year’s COP26 conference. We have assembled a renowned panel of speakers – each a leading figure in their field. \nThis wide-ranging discussion will address topical sustainability questions such as:\n• How will the construction industry change in the next few years?\n• What is happening across the materials production industries?\n• How do we encourage more re-use of existing buildings and infrastructure?\n• What can a built environment professional do differently at work tomorrow? \nQuestions will also be taken from the audience throughout the evening. The event will take place in Glasgow during the COP26 conference. We would love to see you in person\, but you can also join online if you can’t attend in person. This is a great opportunity to be part of the discussion on sustainability – why not join us? \nOnline and in-person event – find out more – Sustainability in structural engineering: Panel discussion – The Institution of Structural Engineers (istructe.org)
