SUMMARY:Development Networks and Urban Growth: The Case of Inverness
DESCRIPTION:Date: Monday\, 04 February 2019 at 5:30PM – 7:00PM\nVenue: Inverness Townhouse\, Castle Wynd\, Inverness IV2 3BJ\nOrganiser: RTPI Scotland – scotland@rtpi.org.uk \nThis lecture draws on planning records and interview material to investigate who comprised the local development network in Inverness between 1997 and 2013 and how that network operated.\nThe concept of development networks embraces developers\, landowners\, funders\, investors\, knowledgeable professionals and local authorities\, and may also include local universities\, trade associations and the local media.\nThis University of Glasgow research found that a closely-knit group of perhaps 30 to 35 individuals\, with a common commitment to the development of the city and whose paths crossed regularly both in the course of business and socially\, were at the core of the Inverness network during that period. But the very informality of the Inverness network raised significant concerns around its accountability\, exclusivity and fragility and about whether small cities such as Inverness would be better to establish more formal and open networks connecting key development actors.\nWith Professor David Adams\, University of Glasgow.\nWe aim to livestream this event to remote venues by video conference link. DESCRIPTION:Held on an annual basis at the Town House in Inverness\, through the kind auspices of the Inverness City Council\, the ‘James Attwood Memorial Lecture’ for 2019 will be given on the subject of ‘Climate Change’ by Ms Joan McNaughton\, former President of the Energy Institute. \nMs McNaughton is currently the Chair of the Climate Change Group and the Energy Coalition of Europe. \nThe event is free to attend but booking is essential. The event will commence at 7pm with a finger buffet prior to the formal part of the evening. SUMMARY:Exploring the Influence of Land Reform on the Scottish Planning System
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, 27 February 2019 at 12:00PM – 2:00PM\nVenue: Canal Parks Pavilion\, Highland Rugby Club\, Inverness\, IV3 5SS\nOrganiser: RTPI Scotland scotland@rtpi.org.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThe Scottish Land Commission was established under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2016 and became fully operational on 1 April 2017. The Commission seeks to create a Scotland where everybody benefits from the ownership\, management and importantly for planners\, the use of the nation’s land and buildings. \nHead of Policy and Research Shona Glenn will give an insight on the Commission’s work in relation to land use planning and discuss the contribution that can be made by planners in furthering land reform. Topics include land for housing and development\, land value capture as well as recent work on compulsory sale orders. \nThe event will also have a particular focus on the role of planners in promoting public interest led development in Scotland.
